"On a
hot dusty road a few miles out of Da Nang, Vietnam a young Marine holds a
small child while calling for a corpsman to come help. The child was a victim of an attack on a bus full of orphan kids
accompanied by a few off duty Marines.
They were headed to the R&R area at China Beach for a day of fun
and a day away from the insanity of war. The young Marine didn’t realize
at the time that he was holding only half a child, blown in half by the
explosion from the grenades that were tossed onto the bus by a very young
Vietcong fighter.
When the corpsman got to the Marine the child was dead
and had to be pried from the young Marines arms. |
A CD single written and performed by Chris Hayden. "A Veteran's Prayer" was written shortly after his return from Vietnam expressing his feelings of despair at that time in his life. The story of the Veteran's Prayer is in his book An American Veteran.
